The Saga of Disa Dirty Teeth

by Baron Patrick O'Malley

The village of Summergate had been a favorite target of raiding eastern Barbarians for several years. The Lemming Warband was in an employment slump due to an annoying outbreak of peace. For a moderate fee, plus all they could take from the Barbarians, the Lemmings agreed to defend the village.

A few of the villagers having some practice at war prepared to battle alongside the Lemming host. Among them was one called Disa Dirty Teeth. The Northmen wondered at her name. She was not gifted of height and her shield hid her from shin to nose. Many thought ill of letting her stand in the line.

Gyrth, never one to miss an opportunity, did grab a crossbow and set upon recruiting her. Dirty Teeth would have none of this. She pushed the bow away, rejecting the idea nearly as fast as she rejected the other things Gyrth proposed. "I will carry my sword and shield, and deal with these Barbarians face to face," she said. Though all feared for her life, and the hole it would leave in the line, Disa would not be turned from her purpose.

On the Day of Thor, scouts brought news of the approaching Barbarians. The Lemming band and Villagers set to stop them at a narrow pass in the mountains. Disa took her place in the line. Grim stood behind her, hoping to lend strength.

On seeing the line of shields backed by axes, spears, and bows the Barbarians set to charge. The charge had such force that the ground did shake before them. The warriors of the Lemming band upon seeing this did grin broadly as a boy receiving his first axe. They were once again in battle, that place where the beast Drafn was born and lived in blood and glory. All other thought was driven from them as the blood lust welled.

The charge hit the shield wall like the clap of thunder. Spears and axes did bite into flesh. A large Barbarian struck Disa with a shield driving he into the dirt in a heap. Grim lifted his axe to crush the man advancing over Disa's body. Before Grim could swing, a sword tip grew from the Barbarian's belly. The other end of the sword was in the hand of Disa and did enter through the Barbarian's groin. It was his death blow and he did crumple to the ground.

Disa leapt to her feet, her face covered in mud. She grinned, showing her dirt-covered teeth, and charged into the oncoming horde. Two of the Barbarians, looking high in fear of the crushing great axe, did not see the approach of Disa. Her charge cost them their footing and they sprawled upon the ground. Disa, now behind the enemy line, did see their leader and set upon him. With a swing most would think beyond her strength, Disa's sword bit his shield and pushed through the block to his side breaking two ribs. The leader fell back trying to bring his sword to bear. It was too late. He could not escape Disa's charge, and her second blow struck at his collar bone and did enter his chest. It was his death blow.

In but a few moments the battle was done. The ground was soaked in Barbarian blood. The Lemming Warband did scream rude things with great joy. They surrounded Disa, who was busy looting the body of the fallen commander. Seeing her great deeds and battle lust the Lemmings asked Disa to join their band. Disa grinned. Her teeth were covered with dirt.
